The origin of hell was really a burning rubbish pit at a place called Gehenna. They didn’t just burn rubbish in this place but criminals too, and it was outside the city of Jerusalem. Perhaps they used this real place to frighten people and discourage crimes from being committed.
< STRONG Jesus used the example of this Gehenna to give visuals of his teachings.
It’s very much like how He used the example of seeds, trees, wheat, bread, wine, pearls, etc to talk about the kingdom of heaven. For example, I can say how hell might be like in modern terms: an endless electrocution in the electric chair.
